 1) Alan G., amerikanischer Chemiker neuseeländischer Herkunft, * Masterton (Neuseeland) 14. 4. 1927; Professor für Chemie an der University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. MacDiarmid ist Mitentdecker elektrisch leitender Kunststoffe (Dotierung von Polyacetylenen und Polyanilinen) und Autor/Koautor von etwa 600 Veröffentlichungen. Er erhielt mit A. J. Heeger und H. Shirakawa 2000 den Nobelpreis für Chemie.
 
 2) Hugh, eigentlich Christopher Murray Grieve ['mʌri griːv], schottischer Lyriker, * Langholm (Dumfries and Galloway Region) 11. 8. 1892, ✝ Edinburgh 9. 9. 1978; Journalist und Herausgeber national orientierter Zeitschriften; 1928 Mitbegründer der Schott. Nationalpartei, später zeitweilig Mitglied der KP. MacDiarmid trat in Abgrenzung von der regionalistischen Dichtung R. Burns' und in Orientierung an W. Dunbar für die Renaissance einer eigenständigen schottischen Literatur und für die Unabhängigkeit von England ein. In den frühen Gedichten (»Sangschaw«, 1925; »A drunk man looks at the thistle«, 1926) schuf er eine mittelschottische, mit keltischen Elementen verschmelzende synthetische Sprache. Später entstanden politische Gedichte (»First hymn to Lenin«, 1931) sowie nach epischer Dimension strebende, sprachlich komplexe weltanschauliche Lyrik (»In memoriam James Joyce«, 1955).
